Is it okay for a leopard tortoise to eat old snail shells?

I'm taking care of a friend's leopard tortoise for the summer, and I allow it to graze outside on sunny days (while I watch it, to make sure it doesn't disappear), and it likes to nibble on really old, discarded snail shells. Is this okay? I don't want it to get sick.
